“You’re off to great places. Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, so get on your way!”
– Dr. Seuss
Nursery is an important time for children to grow both socially and emotionally.
As it is likely to be your child’s first time in a classroom setting, we put a great deal of effort into making it an enjoyable experience for our pupils- as well as a comfortable transition for those who might be a little more nervous on arrival than others!
Before the children start in the Nursery, there is a transition programme in place to ensure that our pupils have a smooth and stress-free induction into their new environment.
This transition begins before the summer when parents attend a meeting that advises them on how best to prepare their little one for their start in September!
Our strong links with local pre-nursery schools means that our newest recruits from these nurseries visit us one afternoon per week for a half term. This allows some of the children to adjust to their new environment and meet the staff that they will eventually be working with- it is always nice to see a familiar face on your first day!
When the holidays are over and September finally arrives, each child is visited in their home by the Nursery staff. It is a valuable opportunity for us to get to know each other over a cup of tea in a setting that is comfortable for the parent and a little less intimidating for the child!
Progress and Development
Children start their Nursery education with an open-day at the start of term, where parents are invited to attend and settle them in to their new school environment. Previously, the children then had half-day attendance to prepare them for the full-time schooling that lay ahead, but we now feel it is in the child's best interests to start full-time, allowing our highly skilled nursery staff to assess their needs and ensure that they all have a calm settling-in period, whilst building new relationships with their peers in the Nursery.
Once your child is happily settled, they are assessed through adult observations to gauge where they lie in the 7 different areas of learning. From this, each child is given targets to best support both their social and emotional needs, as well as their learning and development requirements.
Where necessary, strong links are made with outside agencies – such as the Early Years Intervention Team or Family Support Workers - to provide the best care for our pupils at Servite.
Children with English as an Additional Language also have a Learning Support Assistant to work with them every day in order to help them progress alongside the rest of the class- no one is left behind!
The Wider School
The Nursery children are integrated into life at Servite from the get go!
They take part in whole-school assemblies to celebrate their learning with the older children and prepare a class assembly in the Spring Term to feedback what they have learnt with us so far!
In the summer, we organise a graduation ceremony for the children to celebrate their achievements with their friends and family and at the end of the academic year, there is a programme in place to help the children have a smooth transition from Nursery to Reception.
In the classroom
Teaching and learning in the Nursery is made up from adult-lead activities and independently lead activities. The children have “free-flow” throughout the day, where they move between inside and outside activities at their leisure.
Our Nursery children learn in a fun, engaging and practical way, which in turn, allows them to learn about themselves, their friends and the world in which they live in a safe and secure environment.
All children have sessions with a qualified Music, Art and Dance teacher on a weekly basis- our pupils love to get creative!
We know how hard it can be to let go of your little ones, so we make sure that strong links are made with all of our parents through daily interaction, parents evenings, workshops and observation sheets from home.
There are also plenty of opportunities for you to get involved and volunteer to help out in the nursery- we love hearing from you!
